James Stegman, the head craftsman behind American Buckle, comes from three generations of silversmiths. First established in San Francisco in 1886, his family company is an icon of Western tradition. James’ current workshop is an image out of history—a small, speakeasy-type space in Carson City, Nevada, filled with cast-iron tools and machinery that James’ great-grandfather built by hand almost a century ago. You’d hardly guess that this unassuming joint, with just a four-man crew of silversmiths, was home to a world-class operation. Of course, James has always said he enjoys being underestimated.
The heritage of our craftsmen really speaks to American Buckle’s philosophy. We value the timelessness of Americana style, and we believe in its spirit of individuality.
